Third Russian tanker sinks in the Black Sea in three days

In the Kerch Strait near the port of Kavkaz, a Russian oil tanker sent a distress signal. This is the third such incident in recent days. Tanker accidents threaten an environmental disaster in the Black Sea.

What is known

According to the publication, it is a Volgoneft-109 tanker carrying 4,000 tons of fuel oil. The vessel's fourth cargo tank was leaking. However, the vessel's hull itself was not damaged, so, according to preliminary conclusions, no fuel oil was released into the sea.

Previous accident

On December 15, off the coast of Kerch, a powerful storm broke two Russian oil tankers in half. We are talking about Volgoneft-212 and Volgoneft-239. According to environmentalist Vladyslav Balinskyi, the accident could have released 8,600 tons of fuel oil into the sea. The expert said in a commentary to USI that the slick could reach the coast of Odesa region in the summer.
