The Royal Netherlands Navy has officially decommissioned the Alkmaar-class minesweeper Makkum (M857). The ship will undergo maintenance, after which it will be handed over to Ukraine.

This was reported by the Ministry of Defense of the Netherlands.

What we know about the ship

The minesweeper Makkum has been part of the Dutch Navy for almost forty years. During this time, it neutralized more than 120 explosive objects in the North Sea. In addition, the ship participated in international exercises.

It should be noted that the Netherlands will hand over another minesweeper, the Vlaardingen (M863), to Ukraine. It was decommissioned from the fleet in the spring. After maintenance and training of Ukrainian crews, the ships will be transferred to the Ukrainian Navy. This is expected to happen next year.

As we wrote earlier, the Ukrainian Navy's division of mine countermeasures ships will be replenished with at least five vessels. Two of them have already been handed over to Ukraine, although they cannot yet enter the Black Sea. Three more will be delivered in the near future.

The Ukrainian Navy corvette "Ivan Mazepa" has also been tested.
