Terrible night — how Odesa survived the shelling, video
During the Russian shelling of Odesa on the night of November 7, forty apartments in three buildings were damaged. Fortunately, there were no casualties. But many people will have to spend the night outside their homes.
Novyny.LIVE journalists visited the scene and talked to the residents.
The attack took place when everyone was sleeping
Kateryna, a resident of one of the affected buildings, was sleeping when the shelling started. She describes the night as horrific. According to her, the back of the house was completely without glass, and her apartment's balcony was damaged.
"We woke up at 2 a.m. in the morning from the explosion. Most people were sleeping. Everyone woke up, got up and ran. It was very loud," says the woman.
Marina from Odesa and her husband were also sleeping. They woke up to an air raid alarm, but after reading the monitoring channels, they went back to sleep.
"Suddenly something banged, it was very loud. I woke up my husband, saying it was very close, and he said: "Oh, come on," and then he fell asleep. A minute or so passed, and then it just banged, cracked, and all the glass shattered. We covered ourselves with a blanket to avoid getting hit by the debris," says Maryna.
No panic
Most residents say that they did not feel panic and quickly got their bearings. Maryna says that when she saw the flames and smoke, she and her husband quickly ran outside, as they were afraid that a gas pipe would explode.
"A few minutes later, people were putting out the fire with fire extinguishers. At first, the flames flared up again, but then they were extinguished. This saved us from the fire", says the woman from Odesa.
The windows in Marina's apartment were completely smashed and the front door was damaged. The couple will spend the next night with relatives.
Help for the victims
According to acting Mayor Oleksandr Filatov, residents of the damaged buildings will receive assistance from the city budget to restore windows and doors.
"Our services are going door-to-door, sealing windows with plastic sheeting and registering citizens to come down to the operational headquarters set up for receiving material assistance," the official said.
As a reminder, the fall of the UAV debris in Khadzhybeiskyi district damaged the facade and glazing of an 11-story residential building, 14 parked cars and a gas pipeline (without ignition). The glazing of two nearby five-story buildings was also damaged. A 30-year-old man sustained light injuries.
