Naval drones and a robot dog — Ukraine at NATO exercises
For the first time, the Ukrainian Navy took part in NATO's largest exercise on the use of maritime drones, REPMUS 24. The military of partner countries highly appreciated the innovative developments of Ukrainian sailors.
This was reported by the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.
What was going on
The exercise took place near the Troy Peninsula in Portugal. The participants practiced using drones to fight submarines, neutralize sea mines and protect underwater infrastructure.
Ukrainian sailors used the DELTA combat system to coordinate the work of more than 50 unmanned vehicles of various types - underwater, offshore, ground and airborne. In addition, they were able to connect to the German robot dog Robotics-L.
"Thanks to its mobility, this four-legged robot is able to accompany soldiers in difficult terrain, perform various tasks and help protect them from mine obstacles," the statement said.
Why it is important
During the exercise, the DELTA system was integrated with other combat systems. This made it possible to distinguish between "own" and "enemy" forces and exchange data.
"Joint maneuvers with NATO, such as REPMUS 24, not only facilitate the exchange of experience, but also increase the level of interaction between Ukraine and our partners. The participation of the Ukrainian Navy in these large-scale exercises and their contribution is an important step for the further development and technological improvement of the Defense Forces," said Deputy Defense Minister Kateryna Chernogorenko.
The REPMUS 24 exercise was organized by the NATO Joint Capabilities Group for Maritime Unmanned Systems (JCGMUS), the NATO Center for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE), the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (Portugal) and the European Defense Agency.
As a reminder, the Armed Forces of Ukraine demonstrated how the robot functions to evacuate the wounded. It has already been used by soldiers of one of the brigades.
France has also provided the Ukrainian Defense Forces with the latest drone systems manufactured by Delair. These drones have already successfully passed all tests.
