Romanian presidential candidate Călin Georgescu promises to stop grain exports from Ukraine through Romania if he wins. He also opposes military assistance to Kyiv in confronting Russian aggression.

Călin Georgescu stated this in an interview with Reuters.

What the politician said

The presidential candidate plans to ban the transit of Ukrainian grain through the country, as well as stop any military support for Ukraine.

"All this will stop if I win. How can I agree to this? It is impossible. Romania and the Romanian people come first. It is impossible to imagine that there is a war next to us in the middle of Europe, so the priority will definitely be that this war in Ukraine must be stopped immediately," he said.

The publication recalls that since the beginning of the full-scale war, Romania has helped Ukraine transport millions of tons of grain through the port of Constanta. The Romanians have also supplied weapons to the Armed Forces of Ukraine and trained Ukrainian pilots.

What is known about Georgescu

Călin Georgescu is known for his far-right views. At one time, he belonged to the "Alliance for the Union of Romanians" party, which political scientists call right-wing extremist. The politician approves the regime of Marshal Antonescu, who ruled Romania during World War II and was an ally of Hitler. He has also repeatedly spoken out in support of Russian President Vladimir Putin and called Ukraine a "fictional state".

As a reminder, Georgescu won 23% of the vote and took first place in the first round of the presidential elections in Romania, which took place on November 24. In the second round, he will compete with the leader of the liberal pro-European party "Union for the Salvation of Romania" Elena Lasconi.
