The Black Sea is becoming desalinated — what is the threat

Should we be afraid of desalination of the Black Sea?

The water in the Black Sea, especially near the coast, is becoming fresher. However, this process is completely natural. Moreover, there are even positive aspects of this.

Ecologist Vladislav Balinskyi said this during an interview with Novyny.LIVE.

Features of the Black Sea

According to the expert, the Odesa Bay is unique precisely because it has a fairly low level of salinity. Thanks to this, even some freshwater fish that migrate from rivers from time to time can live here.

"The Odesa Bay has very low salinity, which is why many species have not settled down there. But for us, this is generally good, because the water level in the rivers is decreasing every year, and, for example, the Danube or the Dniester will be able to replenish itself from the water of the Black Sea. Therefore, its desalination is not worth fearing," Vladislav Balinskyi said.

The influence of estuaries

The presence of estuaries also has a positive impact on the Black Sea. In particular, it contributes to biodiversity and an increase in the number of fish.

"The living layer of the Black Sea forms a certain shelf zone that goes far into the depths. It is a cradle for all living creatures. And the estuaries adjacent to it help fish reproduce. Because this is why fish enter fresh water. Therefore, a lot depends on estuaries," the ecologist emphasized.

It should be reminded that gas burning is increasing in the Black Sea off the coast of the Odesa region. Previously, we wrote about the threat of an ecological disaster in the sea.
