On the night of Friday, October 11, the polar lights were noticed again in Odesa region. Residents of the region have seen the amazing glow in the sky for the third time this year. Environmentalists associate this with the unprecedented solar activity.

The glow in the sky was photographed by the journalists of Novyny.LIVE.

Why do we see it

Ecologist Vladyslav Balinskyy notes that the aurora borealis has been observed more and more recently in various countries of the world, in particular in Ukraine.

"Atoms of gases in the Earth's atmosphere emit photons of light during bombardment with ionized particles of the solar plasma (solar wind). The strength of the solar wind directly depends on solar activity, the external manifestation of which is the so-called coronal emissions and electromagnetic radiation. The speed of the solar wind is somewhere in the 250-1000 times slower than the speed of light, so 2-3 days pass between the appearance of powerful solar prominences (flares on the sun) and the aurora borealis, which is already becoming familiar to us," he explains.

According to Vladyslav Balinskyy, the aurora borealis is preceded by geomagnetic storms. Amidst the dynamics of changes in the Earth's magnetosphere, the Sun is at the peak of its eleven-year cycle. That is why this glow in the sky can be seen more often.

Impact on people

The polar lights do not have a special effect on human health. But due to the fact that it is associated with magnetic storms, some people may feel discomfort and deterioration of their condition. First of all, we are talking about weather-dependent people, the elderly and those with chronic diseases. They may experience "jumps" in pressure, headache, insomnia, and aching joints.

It should be reminded, that residents of Odesa observed this natural phenomenon last time on October 8.
