Kakhovka Dam Explosion — Crimea is without fresh water forever
If Kakhovka Dam is not restored, Crimea will be without water forever. In addition, the Russians’ explosion of the Dam caused great damage to the agricultural sector of the southern regions of Ukraine.
This was reported by the media outlet Krym.Realii.
Water shortage
According to Ihor Syrota, CEO of Ukrhydroenergo, there is a shortage of fresh water all over the world. Ukraine is no exception. The lack of water will be especially noticeable after the war ends when the industry needs to be restored.
"We have lost water for Crimea forever. If it is not restored, it will be a loss for Crimea, a loss for the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant — for the cooling ponds that must be constantly fed from the Kakhovka reservoir," Igor Syrota says.
He also noted that the industry and agricultural sector of Kherson region lost up to 94% of water after the dam was destroyed. It is almost impossible to compensate for these losses without restoring the reservoir. Igor Sirota believes that the restoration work will cost around €12 billion.
In total, according to the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Ukraine, the destruction of Kakhovka Dam caused $14 billion in losses.
As a reminder, this summer’s tourist season in Crimea was disrupted due to the accident of oil tankers in the Kerch Strait. We also reported that the storm had swept away the booms around the Crimean bridge.
