New oil product slicks were spotted in the waters around Yalta and Tuzla Island. Fuel oil got into the sea as a result of the accident of two Russian oil tankers in the Kerch Strait.

It was reported by the so-called "Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Crimea" created by the invaders.

According to the monitoring results, fuel oil was detected in the City District of Yalta over an area of 80 square meters. Also, a 2.55 km-long slick appeared on Tuzla Island.

Previously, oil products were found in different parts of Crimea, and even on the coasts of Romania and Turkey.

Details of the disaster

As a reminder, on December 15, a storm sank two Russian tankers, Volgoneft-212 and Volgoneft-239, in the Kerch Strait. 8.6 thousand tonnes of fuel oil were released into the sea. The Russian authorities concealed the true extent of the disaster for a long time. Hundreds of marine life died as a result of the pollution, and birds smeared with oil products were found even in the Odesa region. At the same time, the Russian Federation continues to use outdated vessels, thereby increasing the risk of a new accident.

We reported earlier that it takes three months to a year and up to $10 million to raise sunken tankers from the bottom. Novyny.LIVE also talked to Odesa ecologist Vladislav Balinskyy about the possible consequences of the disaster for the sea and the coast.
